BEST computer system EVER listened to

This is the first review I have taken the time to write: the Bose Companion 5 will just take your breath. The quality is phenomenaRead morel! While it is obviously not a surround sound system, the sound is crisp, strong, and beautiful; it also gets VERY loud. In many respects, this sounds better than the Lifestyle 38 home speaker system we have set up in my living room (paid over $2000 for that system). The sound is best when you're at the desk where the speakers are set up. For this simple reason, $400 is a real bargain for the quality you are getting even though I initially had doubts as to whether the $400 is worth it.
If you can shell out the $400 and are looking for top-quality sound with excellent build quality, this is absolutely the system to get.

    Still on the fence...

    Written by JD from Hamilton

I've only owned them a couple of days now. There's something missing that I can't put my finger on. After reading all of the revRead moreiews, there are three things I will try in order to improve the sound.

    1) Position the acoustimass module forward facing instead of sideways, against the wall as I have it set up now. I now understand that the acoustimass also delivers mid-tones, so maybe that's what I'm missing from this system.

    2) As instructed, I turned the iTunes EQ off. Maybe I'll turn it back on and make some slight adjustments to the EQ afterall.

    3) They've had a total of about 30 minutes use. Apparently they should be broken in for a few hours before making final judgement.

My flatmate is still sleeping, and I'm working today and tomorrow, otherwise I'd make these changes now. Instead, I'll post my final thoughts next week in order to give them a fair chance. Besides, I really don't want to return them! This is supposed to be Bose's top of the line computer system... there is a good chance it's just me at this point.

All in all, they sound good to me for the first little while, but after about 20 minutes in front of them listening to music I want to turn them off. Maybe it's the Bose Truespace digital surround circuitry?

I don't really game or watch movies on my computer... I generally only play music on it and often use the Airport Express to stream it to the living room stereo as well. I understand that the C3's don't use the digital surround technology, so maybe they are more suited for my needs. I'm thinking that's the real problem... the speakers are always on in simulated 5.1 surround sound mode.

In any case... I'll try the above changes and post my final thoughts in a few days.

    Not what I hoped for

Written by PG from San Clemente

When I first set this system up on my new MacPro, I was blown away; clear, clean strong, truly remarkable, especially for watchingRead more movies. Now, a week later, I've discovered a deficiency that really disappoints me. Bose instructions suggest that you should turn off your equalizer and let the music sound the way the musicians intended it. If you follow that advice, you're going to run into a lot of recordings that sound like the vocal track is being projected from a distant coal mine. You can compensate fairly well with the iTunes equalizer but the fact is that my old $120 sound system did a better job with at last 10% of what I play. Notable victims include David Bowie (try Modern Love), John Mellencamp, and Journey, but you'll notice the effect to some degree with an unfortunately broad spectrum of artists. Overall, the sound quality is still so good that I rate the product at 4 stars, but you would be well advised to test the system with a representative selection of your favorite music before you sink $400 into it.

    overpriced

As an audiophile I sample lots of speakers systems whether they are for home theatre, two channel listening, or computer speakers.Read more In all catagories Bose speakers have been over priced for their performance. Ever since Bose came out with their 901 line, Bose has presented themselves as the Ferrari of home audio. But sadly the rest of their products just don't live up to the 901's quality, and these are no difference. If these speakers cost 200 dollars less they would be a good system, but for the price tag, well they just don't perform.

    Highs:
-They do a pretty decent job reproducing high frequencies
    - For a computer sub it hits the lows nicely.
-The touch pad is a neat feature that I would like ot see on other models

    Lows:
-as i have stated many times its over priced
-I have found that the mids are lacking definition.
-The sub is lacking character, only giving out thumps.
