Nothing better with the firmware update.
To make them work I have to run a small video in loop to not make them go to sleep...

And Please Apple do not sell this junk anymore!

I bought this external hard drive at the same time I bought my mac book....back in early September a couple months ago. I'm a collRead moreege student and figured it would be a good idea to back up all my pictures and movies and music, and school work etc. But it took me a while to get all settled in and get everything working so i've only used it to back up my system about 3 times. However, I just now plugged it in permanently and put it on my desk and set all the time-machine settings to back it up regularly and the thing won't work. it takes forever "preparing to back up" and then once it actually starts it goes for about 5 mins and then gives me an error message saying it couldn't do it and the last back up failed. I've tried about 4 times now. rebooted both machines. nothing works. can i return it do you think?

DO NOT USE with Leopard/Time Machine

I bought three of these to backup 3 Macs and non of them have worked properly with USB, FW4 or FW8 cables. After a few days, the Read moreMac loses connection and you have to reboot the drive to reconnect. After several weeks of this, several of them couldn't connect at all even after rebooting.

So, I have 3 worthless backup drives.

    Buy a non-WD device.
