This is not a review - it's a fix for the scroller.

We all know this is a great mouse. I'm on my second one. But I've had a problem with the scrolling on both mice. I didn't mind buying a second one after the first one stopped working but I wasn't about to buy a third one, no matter how mighty they are.
It turns out that after a few months of regular use the mouse stops scrolling either up or down or sideways or all ways according to my experience and others that I have read.
I went to the Apple store by my house today and talked to a guy about sending this mouse in for repair since I have only had it a few months. He said I needed an appointment, but he also said it was easily fixed. He advised me to clean the roller ball on the top with alcohol wipes or a q-tip soaked in alcohol.
I thought it wouldn't work but since I had to wait for my appointment to send it in to apple I tried it and cleaned it thoroughly with alcohol and a q-tip. I let it dry for five minutes and it works like new.
I am very pleased with the advice I got and just wanted to share with some of you who might be having the same problem.

    Sadly Flawed

The bluetooth mighty Mouse is a great concept unfortunately its quality falls short. Being a production house we have somewhere around 10 mighty mouses, unfortuanelty all but one are in the junk pile. The roller ball simply stops working after a couple months, (very annoying), and yes we have done all the prescribed methods of cleaning, which only temporarily fixed issue, if at all. Hopefull Apple will correct this problem soon. Also the right click function usually suffers the next breakdown. Unfortunatey this mouse is just not up to par with other wireless devices.

    Lag, Lag and more Lag!

I purchased the wireless keyboard and mouse with my $6000 Mac Pro. The keyboard works fine without any problems. The mouse on the other hand is terrible. The sales rep told me in the Apple store that the aluminum case on the Mac Pro doesn't allow for a good signal back to the mouse. I'm telling you it's got to be the worst mouse I ever used. I purchased the wired mouse and I now can operate the Mac the way it should be. Stay away if you have a Mac Pro.

use clean hands, fresh batteries, proper technique!

I've had a wireless MM on my iMac for almost a year and am about to buy another to use with my old G4 powerbook at a different _aw_location. The new WMM will replace an annoying Logitech USB wireless mouse that has always had tracking issues. The scroll wheel issue with the Mighty Mouse? You know that filth you see on the keyboards and mice of public computers? A one-person dose of that ends up on the WMM scroll wheel, and because the wheel is tiny, it has a greater impact. I clean my hands regularly and preventively clean the scroll wheel occasionally, according to directions. Battery issues? I use lithiums. They are lighter than alkalines and because they last longer, they end up being cheaper and easier. Button issues? I have learned to lift my left finger enough to right-click without even thinking about it. I don't use the side-squeeze buttons much, but if they were any softer, I bet Expose would be activated when I didn't want it to be. It seems like most of the problems people have with this mouse would never exist if they were prevented by the user.

Good (except the ball stopped working)

Very good mouse, but the scroll ball stopped working after about a year, & every thing I did to clean it failed. I took the mouse apart and found the bars that the scroll ball runs on were covered in dirt, this would be a better mouse if there was a way of cleaning the scroll ball mechanism without dismantling the mouse, design error I think

    Great mouse & features but...

    Written by JN from Murphy

First I want to say that this mouse has excellent features and function. Bluetooth is really the only way to go for a wireless mouse or keyboard because the last thing you want to have to keep track of is the little wireless transmitter.

All that aside, I have a couple issues that I thought I'd address for those wanting a little more input than complaints about the scroll button or size...

    (1) This mouse doesn't travel well unless you have a way to protect it from getting squashed. I need a mouse I can carry with me on trips, etc. so I grabbed mine and threw it in my laptop bag. Well, as you can imagine, even with a protected compartment in my bag, it still got compressed and since then, my right click function has been a little hit and miss in that it sometimes won't function.

    (2) Battery life, okay, I know... show me something that takes batteries and lasts a good long time and unless you're not using it, that's a fantasy. However, it seems like I'm putting new batteries in this about every 3 weeks. My wife & I are both BT wireless mouse and keyboard users so we're moving to the rechargeable battery and just skipping having to buy new ones all the time.

All that aside, the functionality with Mac is awesome and the features included with this mouse blows Logitech away. I was a hard-core Logitech customer for 20 years until this mouse came along and maybe its because its an Apple product but I still really like this mouse.

One of the best mouses.... with clean hands.

I love this mouse. Bluetooth and all. AWESOME scroll button. Touch sensitive shell works great for me. I've had it for almost a year at this point.

The thing was i came here and read some reviews first.

The reason peoples mice are getting unresponsive is something us musicians call "hand cheese." Its that gunk from unwashed hands that builds up on the surfaces you use frequently. this causes two problems with this mouse.

    1) There isn't an easy way (i don't even know how) to take the scroll ball out and clean the wheels that the ball rotates on. The cheese makes this ball hard to scroll with sometimes.

    2) The hand cheese on the surface of the mouse makes the right click unresponsive at times. This can be alleviated with a damp cloth or better yet, one of those non-streak cleaning solutions that you use on computer screens.

Otherwise one of the best mice on the market!

    Scroll Ball is USELESS!!!!

Written by SD from New Albany

I love my Mighty Mouse it matches my Mac perfectly but it is designed poorly in my opinion. The scroll ball only works half the time and seems to hang up. It will not allow me to scroll down at all. It scrolls up with no problems but when it comes to the other half of the function, scrolling down it simply does not work. This makes one of the primary functions of purchasing it null and void. I've tried repeatedly to have it serviced and or receive help and have been basically told thats too bad. UNACCEPTABLE! This is the most expensive mouse I've ever bought and it is about to be shelved and summed up as a bad experience and a $70 BRICK!! DO NOT BUY THIS MOUSE!!!

    Another fantastic Apple product

Written by CQ from Des Moines

Okay, of course some will say this mouse is a little expensive, which it is, but it is really worth the money if you are looking for a great mouse. It has all of the buttons you really need with none of the ridiculous extra 400 buttons like some of the Microsoft and other mice. The battery life is fantastic (around 2-3 months with a good set of batteries) even with heavy usage. And, most importantly, the look and feel of the mouse is great, it just fits in your hand perfectly.

The only thing I have noticed to be a problem was that the scroll ball on the top sometimes stops functioning correctly. However, I spoke to someone at the Apple Store and they gave me a great tip. If you just clean the ball real well with the same solution you would clean your monitor with, roll it around a lot, and then let it sit for a while it will be fine once all of the dirt breaks lose from inside.

Anyway, I would definitely recommend this mouse to anyone with bluetooth that is looking for the best mouse out there.

    Scroll Ball Broken...AGAIN!

Written by RM from Fairfax Station

This is the second cordless Mighty Mouse I have owned, and the just like the one it replaced, the scroll ball has stopped functioning. It will scroll up (sometimes), but has quit scrolling down. I have tried all the various tricks to get it functioning to no avail. Guess I'll return it (again) and get another replacement. I'm only glad that it's still under warranty. As a side note, virtually everyone I know with a Mighty Mouse (both corded and cordless) has had problems with the scroll ball. You would think that Apple would be able to address this problem, considering the number of people with problems. Just read some of these reviews and see for yourself. Also...it eats batteries like there's no tomorrow!
