  • M-Audio FastTrack Recording Interface

People obviously don't know anything about this product.

I have been using the M-Audio Fast Track for several years on both a PC and Mac(Same one never bought a new one).

I have never had an issue with it, Ever!

Either you people can't read the Box when you buy it or the manual(Install drivers first, And its plug and play on certain OSX Versions, This is updated by M-Audio Regularly), Or your to impatient to try and figure it out so you go shouting how bad it is or "It doesn't have Phantom power for condensers" Read the Box or description!!!!! And BTW M-Audio Updates their site regularly on drivers and updates.

This to anyone just looking for an interface is a great place to start. Input for guitar or keyboard and a mic input for a dynamic mic. Great place to start.

Also an important note that can be found in the manual, If your using a Macbook plug the interface into the front port furthest from the screen, For some reason the back port has an issue with all audio interfaces.

    RTFM People!

    Not exactly the full package

So I bought the M-audio Fast Track USB hoping to record to garageband, and hoped to be able to use condenser mics, but then come to find out, you do need phantom power, unless you have the Fast Track Pro.

Thus, if you are getting no sound, it is probably because you are using a mic that is not powered. I bought a $50 Direct box with phantom power and now everything is up and running. I have not tried running a guitar directly into this box, but I expect that the power boost is very minimal. You will be better off with phantom power of some sort if you are trying to run any type of mic through the fast track and into garage band. The sound will not be perfect, but this is a low end recording system, so make of it what you can.

Without phantom power, I have been able to run into the Fast Track (using some additional connectors) to convert vinyl and cassette into mp3.

    Agree with "Does not work"

I thought I was going crazy, because I could not get this thing to work. I also use Mac OS X 10.5.6 and it is not supported. This is an older product, and even if you meet the minimum requirements, it might not work on newer machines or operating systems. Beware!

    Doesn't Work

This recording interface will not work with Garage Band 09 so look elsewhere for a USB / Instrument interface. Frankly, I don't think Apple should be carrying this device in their store until the company offers drivers that work.

    Needs Updated Drivers

It doesn't work with the new garageband '09. I bought this excited to try it out on the new Guitar Track wherein I could setup an amp with stomp boxes, however it didn't work.

Does not work with Garage Band '09 Lean to Play feature

I bought this product to use it with Garage Band '09 and it's Learn to Play feature. Unfortunately it only works with the regular Garage Band '09 components and not the Learn to Play feature.

    Does not work

I was very disappointed to learn, after receiving this product, that it does not support 10.5.6. This is not noted ANYWHERE....not here on the Apple Store page, and not on M-Audio's website either.

Check if a driver exists for this before you buy

Go to the m-audio web site and look to see if there is a driver available for the version of Mac OS X you are running BEFORE you buy this. Currently (20 Jan 09) M-Audio does not support 10.5.6 Their web site says "Check back later". It may work well on an older versin of Mac OS but I'm not down grading.

    Great for casual player

If you're a casual electric guitar player and you already have a Mac, this a great deal. For the price of an okay amp, you get to actually use the great recording software in Garage Band, basically any effect you could want other than wah wah, and (if you have separate speakers) better sound quality than most amps give. All in all a great buy if you just want to mess around on Garage Band.

    Terrible Device! No Driver Support!

    Written by WT from Moody

This is one of the worst devices I've ever owned. It doesn't work half the time, because it takes M-Audio FOREVER to update their drivers for new OS updates. When it does work, the sound of whatever you are recording is very faint. It only records mono, even if you have it set to stereo. I've tried it on both Windows and OS X with the same results. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. Sorry M-Audio, but you should have issued a recall on this device a long time ago.
