I got this hard drive and it works great. It's a little slow when transferring large data, BUT...
AFTER A WHILE, THESE DRIVES DON'T WORK. ALL HARD DRIVES FAIL AT SOME POINT, BUT I GOT ONLY A YEAR OUT OF MINE. I HAVE YET TO FIND A SOLUTION TO RECOVER ALL OF THE INFORMATION MY HARD DRIVE CARRIED.
DO NOT TRUST ANY WESTERN DIGITAL HARD DRIVE TO LAST LONG!!!(22 of 37 people found this review useful)

PowerBook power issue

Nice little drive, but as mentioned by ES there is a problem with some laptops. My 15" PowerBook couldn't detect the drive. I called WD's customer service, and according to the guy in India some PowerBooks don't provide enough power through the USB port to run the drive (only about 80% of what it requires). Their solution was to send me (no charge) a USB Y-cable that plugs into both of my USB ports. That works fine, but of course I can't use a USB mouse at the same time. So I ran over to the Apple store and picked up a wireless mouse. Having to pay the extra $70 is what prompted me to give it only four stars. Works great on my MacBook, though, through a single port.

I bought this product in August and I have used it as my Time Machine backup since and it works great. I only wish that it would work and backup faster. Otherwise, no crashes and its slim design allows me to put it in my carrying case with ease.

Great Drive with minor issue...

While this is a great little drive, it DOES have a problem when working with some laptops. My 17" PowerBook will not "see" the drive unless it's plugged into a powered USB port. Apparently, it's a "quirk" that Cupertino knows about and the powered USB port was their idea. So, I'm not really free to take my laptop around if I want to use iTunes because that's where I place the media.

Before this product I had purchased a 720 My Book Western Digital external Hardrive and it worked fine for the first couple of Months..
After that it just stopped working.. I lost ALL of my backed up data that was on it.. Luckily I didnt have anything VERY important on it.
But Now i bought this one and it has NOT given up on me yet and i hope it wont... It is even better then the my book because it does not require the external power source which is great as i can use it on the plane!

I'm not a fan of how much space time machine takes up (although i loooove the idea). The software that came right on the drive itself allows me to backup specific folders (like my desktop or my itunes folder) without backing up my whole drive. VERY awesome.
From an ergonomic perspective, I really really liked the 'soft touch' feel of the drive, and the bag it came with keeps it from getting beaten up in my laptop bag.
