    Unreliable

    Written by GE from OXFORD

I bought one of these as I thought it would complement my Apple setup well, both in terms of looks and in terms of storage capacitRead morey. I was also excited about the prospect of having additional USB ports to use.

Unfortunately, the drive died and I had to return it after less than 12 hours of use. I read around on the internet, and it seems that this is not an uncommon occurrence for Iomega drives, so I elected to take a refund and buy a 1TB Western Digital model.

My advice is to steer clear of this one.

    Hot Hard Drive

Written by GR from Haydon Bridge

I have the 500 gig version of this drive.

The makers (and the Applestore website) suggest stacking the Mac on top of the drive, bRead moreut I found that made everything run really hot. I prefer not to do that, so I put them side by side although there is a height difference between the drive and the Mac Mini.

It's almost as quiet as the Mini, although I have it and the Mac standing on some quarter inch thick rigid foam tiles, to prevent mechanical vibration resonating through the shelf. If there is a fan in the box it's silent.

The drive has three USB2 and three Firewire connections; and like the Mac, these are all on the back of the box. (Why not put some on the front?) If you connect using firewire, then the USB ports on the drive do nothing, and vice versa. You cannot connect using both. I have my iPod Mini dock daisy chained off the back of the drive using Firewire, but the Mac doesn't 'see' the iPod unless the Iomega drive is switched on.

One other point is that this drive doesn't appear to spin down if you unmount it, so if I really need total silence (when I'm recording music) I have to switch it off at the back.

Comes supplied with Dantz Retrospect, although with Time Machine, you probably won't need it.

All in all, a pretty nice product. There are cheaper 500 gig drives out there, but this one just about looks the part.

    troublesome beginning

plugged in firewire cable. it worked like a breeze for a half an hour and then it just died. i've no idea what happened but as i wRead moreas copying files from mac mini to minimax, the device suddenly stopped functioning. i switched to USB, back to firewire, also tried with MBP — no success. neither of computers could recognise the device anymore. i realised that hard drive makes no sound at all when switched on. it's dead silent.

i had been waiting for minimax for quite some weeks so of course it was rather big disappointed.

i've no previous experience on iomega products and it's up to their customer support if there will any future experience. it goes without saying that i'm somewhat disappointed with the device's functionality.

maybe i'm was just unlucky, this cannot be happening to others, right?

    Excellent Drive all round.

    Written by TA from London

I've had the Minimax for a little over 2 months now, and have been immensely satisfied. The drive is for the most part silent, wiRead moreth only a little noise during intensive use; even then the fan is hardly noticeable. If you want quiet; this drive is an excellent choice.

In terms of looks; the drive fits perfectly alongside the Mac Mini (i have mine stacked). Although the Minimax is plastic rather the aluminium it would take a very keen eye to notice. Admittedly the illuminated 'i' logo on the front can be annoying as it flickers when transferring data; but unless you have it in your bedroom its not a problem.

The drive would have got 5 stars; however the first drive i got died after two days and had to be sent back-so word of warning, don't rush to download all your files straight away; give your drive a few days to settle in. The replacement has worked almost non stop for the two months since with no issue.

The drive works perfectly with time machine; either wired with the firewire/usb connection or wirelessly (if you start time machine with it wired though, you can't then switch to wireless back ups)

overall, an excellent choice. It comes pre-formatted in Mac extended journaled so no reformatting is needed.

I'd give it five stars for noise level, speed, performance, reliability and style, marking it down only for Iomega's quality control!
