- (1) Wireless Internet access requires a wireless-enabled computer, a base station or other access point, and Internet access; fees may apply. Some ISPs are not currently compatible with Time Capsule.
- (2) Time Capsule is based on an IEEE 802.11n draft specification and is compatible with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g. Performance is based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes Time Capsule-based network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort or AirPort Extreme enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions.

Time Capsule - 1 TB

I am a longtime Mac/Apple user, so expected this product to meet the same quality standards as i've come to expect. However, I tr…Read moreied this product for 2 months, but it slowed my DSL connection to a crawl every hour. With the iTunes software update (fiasco) last summer, I could no longer keep it running. With every new iTunes download, the Time Capsule kept being identified as my primary wireless hub (it's not due to my DSL provider) and after several hours Apple Support acknowledged this is a problem - to be solved only by replacing my third party wireless modem/router with Apple equipment and resetting all wireless devices. It's not worth it until the performance impact is resolved. Apple needs to offer options for frequency of back-up, as well as improve performance and not assume all hardware is Apple in the software updates. My Time Capsule will remain idle until then.

Time Capsule - 1 TB
Good hardware, software needs more options, feedback
Written by CM from Brooklyn

I have had my 1TB Time Capsule for 9 months now and I love it. Hardware-wise I give it five stars. It has been flawless. I have at…Read more times given this thing a real workout - due to various laptop purchases and reinstalls it has backed up hundreds of GBs in a single session several times over ethernet and also looks after a 200GB+ stored file Macbook Pro, a 40GB Macbook and a 10GB iBook G4.
The software does have a few issues however, hence I docked it one star.
Firstly it is not configurable enough. My wife gets annoyed with it running so often.
Second it is not informative enough in what it is doing. For example it doesn't present an option to log what it scanned and what it backed up to the remote disk. I do look at messages in /var/log/system.log but many (most?) Mac users wouldn't know to look there, and that only gets status changes anyway, not a full log. I haven't found any other logfiles for it. If I could get more detailed logs I could work out additional directories to exclude. For example I suspect maybe it backs up the Firefox cache directory as it seems to find things to backup merely after a little bit of browsing.
Thirdly it seems to perform very variably when saving files - even after moving my laptop and Time Capsule to a pure 802.11N network, and with the laptop on a table with line of sight to the Time Capsule, I still rarely if ever witness it pushing a lot of data over wireless. It seems to be throttled either deliberately or by the implementation. It can be annoying when I want to close the laptop and go out but it's sitting there "finishing backup".
I am not TOO concerned about the software issues because Apple has a history of issuing interesting hardware with a stripped down set of software and then fleshing it out in later releases. Another feature I would like to see is an option to include certain files that it currently excludes - really it should be up to me whether to store my Aperture files on Time Capsule and if it runs slow perhaps I would hook up via ethernet.
Other positives about this device: painless file and printer sharing with Windows using the provided software; access to files in the backups simply by mounting the time capsule and browsing, and finally the "acid test" for any backup solution, it has kept all my files safe!(31 of 36 people found this review useful)

It was really slow to do the initial back up, and when my mac book has been away from the time capsule for a while it is slow too.…Read more But it does exactly what it's supposed to, always works, haven't had any problems. Shaky First Impression
Written by DL from Santa Monica

Setup of the Airport section was easy. It's an Airport Extreme with a 1 TB hard drive, and Airport works just great. However, the …Read morehard drive when updated by wireless is DOG SLOW and hourly Time Machine updates are slowing down my wireless network. Which is a big problem.
Initial backup of 100 GB of data on my MacBook Pro took approximately 30 hours by wireless. Brutal. Initial backup of 400 GB of music and data on my iMac was going on 20 hours when it was inadvertently interrupted. Something Apple advises against. When I resumed, I tried doing so via USB for a better download time. Another 30 hours later, it became clear this process would not complete.
Apple Support suggested starting over with a direct Ethernet connection. This took around 20 hours to complete. Better than anything else I'd tried, but extremely slow for a hard drive in 2008. Something Apple's tech support pages don't tell you -- if the initial backup is interrupted, don't continue. Trash the incomplete backup and start over.
Now that everything is set up, the lack of configurability in Time Machine means that every hour an automatic backup takes place lasting 5-10 minutes. When this is happening, my Airport network slows to a crawl. Sometimes pages won't load at all. This is a serious bug. I would like to see Apple allow more configuration options in Time Machine, and come up with a software/firmware update to fix the speed issue, at least so that web pages take precedence over Time Machine backups and I don't lose Internet speed for a fraction of every hour as a penalty for using Time Machine.
I am considering disabling Time Machine when doing heavy web-surfing -- not optimal for a disaster-prevention program -- or even exchanging Time Capsule for an Airport Extreme, a new Airport Express and $200 cash. As a Mac faithful and AAPL shareholder, it pains me to say this, but this has been my experience.
If you don't have a ton of data, and aren't concerned about the speed issues, the feature set is certainly worth the premium price. However, if any of the above could be an issue for you, I'd do some more research and ask Apple if they intend to fix any of the above problems. Lots of luck!

This product took 4 days to simply do the initial back up of 85 gb. I have a standard hard drive that could of done it in about 3 hours or less. I think it's a great concept but horrible payoff. I highly recommend you pass on this product and wait for the next better version.(3451 of 4254 people found this review useful)

Works great.

Getting it running was very simple. I have a printer and two hard drives attached. I have edited Final Cut Pro projects wirelessly…Read more, and watched eyeTV recorded shows wirelessly.
The other day, I went to the mall and logged on to my Time Capsule server using the Apple Store's wireless network. I copied a file from my MacBook Pro back to one of the drives attached to the Time Capsule. Cool.
It is probably possible to do the things Time Capsule does for less money, but who cares? This device simply works.
It would be nice to have a disk utility to check the health of the drive.(2358 of 3203 people found this review useful)
