Easy to set up and use but.....

As usual Apple have made setting this base station up as easy as can be. Although it does take a while to boot up and again when it reboots having adjusted the settings.
The downside is when printing to a printer connected to the base station by USB it can get painfully slow.
My Canon Pixma iP4850 when connected to my MBP zips along when printing an A4 colour print. Do the same via the Airport Express Base Station and the first few passes of the print head are much like the speed when connected by direct USB. Then it slows down with a pause after each traverse of the print head with the occasionally flurry of continuous print head movement before going back to traverse then pause, traverse and pause. So printing an A4 colour print becomes a bit of a chore.
Googling the problem it looks like this is caused by making what is essentially a USB driver run over a wireless connection and in some cases you get this slow down.
Text printing seems to be OK but for colour prints I think I will connect directly to the printer by USB cable.
Oh well you live and learn!

Mine was bought for me as a present. used the Cd's set it all up with wep passwords etc etc. connected a usb control hub to it and ran my printer from one port and a 2TB hard drive from the other. had trouble at first with the UBS's but figured it out afterwards. running perfectly, can print from any of my 4 laptops and can stream all movies and music from my hard drive anywhere to any laptop.
My advice to anyone using more that 1 computer or laptop, GET ONE..

Easy setting up and fast (special comment on connecting PS3 Danish users)

Got my airport express up and running in 10 minutes. Im no expert, but the setting up was really easy. 1. install Airport utiliy (cd in package) 2. connect all wires (in my case: fiber wire and printer). 3. Plug in the Airport express and the light will glow (no on/off button). 4. Open the airport software downloaded (see 1, if you can't find the destination simply use spotlight search function i apple menubar, search for "airport").
Now you will be guided through the setup. For Danish users - don't give your network a name with the DK letters æ,ø,å, this will mean trouble if you later want to use your playstation3 wireless on your airport network. The range of the airpot express is good covers all 140 m2 in my home with high connection rate. Next month ill be buying another airport express for my speakers - AirTunes gonna rock my roof off :o)

Great product. . .i use it at college we don't have wifi in traditional housing so i plug my ethernet cord and it creates my own wireless network within my dorm. Sometimes it does have to be reset though cause of some issue with the IP addresses. . .

The product might be good but i will never know. Spent 3 hours trying to set it up using our desk top. The directions are not non-computer tech type person friendly. Twice, somehow, i deleted the wireless router we had setup. Thank God for backup spots. I called tech support and that got me nowhere. Something they didnt tell me either was that if you dont have the correct windows program or macbook its will not work. I found that out after opening it. I took it back to the mac store i bought it from and they charged me a restocking fee because it falls under "computer". All around i lost $10, 1/4 tank of gas and all i got was a UUUUGE headache.best advice for someone wanting this unless u have a macbook thats up to date dont buy it.

Great concept - but wireless drops out regularly

I was delighted when I first came across airport express as it appeared to be exactly what I was looking for. I picked up two, in spite of thinking that it was overpriced (by about double).

Truly it's a good thing that Apple's telephone support is top notch because we spent HOURS on the phone trying to sort our some technical issues. There are constant dropouts, even after replacing the wireless router and dozens of factory resets.

Wired rather than wireless, this product is 100% amazing. Controlling from an iPod or iPhone is fabulous. But the point of getting it, was to avoid running cable. Hopefully a future version is better on the wireless end.

I am using the router my phone company gave me for my dsl. I then have a base station airport and I have a express. it seems to work ok in my house. When I go to my garage it works outside the garage ,but I have no signal inside my garage. My garage is a normal wood framed stucco building. I have even tried to get my computer to recognize my airport base (which it doesnt show up in my network) and hook the airport express to the same base to extend the range. very disappointed with the range and way it doesnt setup

    Just set up AirPort Express

I set up the AE in my home office on my MacMini and it was effortless on my part, then I turned on my Macbook Pro and it pretty much connected itself. Right now my transmission rate is 130, compared to 30 with the 812.11g router I replaced with the AirPort Express.
Set up was pretty simple, just connected the cables and plugged it in, and later connected a 3.5mm cable from the AE to my stereo receiver. All my computers and printers are wirelessly connected and it was so easy, the network practically set up itself. I just followed the prompts. When I pulled the AE out of the outlet to add the 3.5mm cable, I had to reset the cable modem. I realize now I probably should have disconnected from the network, rather than just pull the plug. Live and learn... It is easy to listen to iTunes using the AirPlay feature. Open iTunes, bottom right is a chevron symbol, just clicked that and selected my network, and played stereo receiver iTunes from my laptop. I totally love this, should have done it a while ago...

I had a netgear for 3 weeks, it went out ever 2 hours. I bought an airport express that I've now had for almost a year and it has yet to disconnect me. I even have business class internet and it spits out service crystal clear.
    Buy it.

    Brilliant!

...It took some encouraging to write this review, but in the end I thought it may help a lot of people.
This product is easy to set-up.. I was up and running within 10 minutes. The sound quality is great when connected by mini jack and crystal clear when using digital optical.

After 20 minutes I had created two types of profiles using the Airport Utility.

    1) (Primary Use) One which uses Ethernet only. The device is connected to my existing wireless network and the device does not broadcast another necessary signal.

    2) Stand alone Wifi - This is when i want to take it on holiday / friends house / BBQ. Simply plug it the mains and any sound system; the device will broadcast and you simply connect with your iPod/iPhone/iPad/Mac/Windows.

For those who are power/eco conscience, the unit consumes 2W when on standby, which isn't bad at all.

Note:It can be tricky if your attempting to extend your wireless range when using another branded router. Ensure your existing router supports (WDS Mode). Don't be afraid to try out different settings to find the right one for you and if you fancy edit the settings 'Manually' on the Airport utility.
If you go wrong... you can reset the unit by holding down the reset button for 10 seconds and waiting for the light to flash amber rapidly.

    Covering my back....
I would have given a 5 Star review however there are a lot of people complaining that it's not very durable. I just hope the unit doesn't cut-off after 15 months.

    Perfect for Extending Wireless Signal
    • Written by JC from Chatsworth

I bought the Airport Express in hopes to extend the signal of my existing wireless network in a large house. I started using it a few days ago and my internet bars went from 1 and always cutting out to full bars instantly after installing it using Airport Utility and simply plugging it in to a power outlet. I didn't even have to run an ethernet cable to it! Also my laptop connects to my wireless network instantly when I open my laptop, when before it would take 3-5 minutes to get 1 bar of service. Now I can stream movies on my apple tv without being disconnected. This has truly been the perfect solution to years of bad internet service on the second floor of the house.

    Pros:
•Easy to set up using Airport Utility
    •Affordable
    •No cables required
    •It WORKS

    Poor connectivity
    • Written by MC from Baton Rouge

I haven't been happy with the connectivity. When streaming music to the speakers connected to this thing, it stops playing every other song for about 10 seconds. If I try to stream from my computer it does the same thing.
Also, I've got a wireless speaker that's connected to an airport express. And running the two wireless signals at once is a disaster. The wireless speaker works fine on it's own, but there seems to be a problem with connectivity while running the two at the same time.

I have 3 Airport Express. I've used them to create a wireless network from my existing house wide ethernet network. So, each Express is directly connected to my ethernet network (I'm not trying to extend an existing wireless network). Two of them are also tied into audio/video systems for iTunes playback and one is used to drive a printer. It was a little tricky to set up (it probably took an hour for the initial set up and a couple hours over a couple of days to tweak it). The system has worked flawlessly for 3 years.

I only gave it 4 stars since my MBP's won't switch automatically if I move to a new location and there is an Express with a stronger signal. It only switches when the old signal is dropped. But that's really a MBP/OSX issue.

One of the best things is that I can take an Express on the road. Hook it up to the hotel's ethernet network and create my own private network. It tends to be much faster than the hotel wireless. It also adds extra security.

I use this product as a Wi-Fi extender along with the Airport Extreme and the device continually turns off and goes to the yellow/orange light. I have attempted to reset and manually set it up over and over with no success. I may be returning it this weekend.

OMGOSH. I love it. Super easy and when I lose electricity, no problem. My printer prints wirelessly from computer and iPad. Don't know why o
I waited so long and wasted money on other routers -- not to mention all the phone calls to others countries trying to get set back up.
    I lllooovvveee it.
