Office 2008 for Mac - Home and Student Edition
Ehh.

This is a completely unbiased review. Although Word is a big improvement over TextEdit, it is not worth it. Like others have said,…Read more it is glitchy. I'll give you an example. If I have Safari open and in my top left space (in Spaces) and Microsoft Word in the bottom left space. After switching back and forth a few times, I'll go to Spaces, click the space with Word, and when it opens, nothing will be in that space. Then when I go back to spaces, Word will have jumped to the top right, the top left, etc. I don't have much experience in Excel, and don't use it, so I won't get into that. Powerpoint is OK but I haven't used it that much. Then I got curious. I ordered iWork '09. I am very impressed. Everything is fast, easy, and intuitive. I love the preset templates, especially in Pages and Numbers. Save yourself the money and hassle, and go buy iWork.

Not a total Piece of ... but...

I would not say that Office 2008 is a total piece of ... because of the nice features and the interface. I like to work with it b…Read moreut what annoys me is that it crashes at least 2-3 times a day. Amazingly enough ( ;o) ), this is the only application written by Microsoft I use and this is the only one that crashes and/or chokes my system when it is open. Why am I not surprised? It seems like said the same thing when I had a pc... Even though this is very frustrating sometimes, I will live with it because of the interesting features it has. If you are just typing simple texts and spreadsheets, it is not worth it, use an alternative from mac. If you still want yo use Office, well, be patient and save you work often. And for Entourage? Don't base you purchase on this. I am using it but I am not sure if I like it or not, in fact I am not that impressed. There is enough built-in application in MacOS and there are other freeware that can do the job well enough .

No VBA, great interface
Written by GL from Sacramento

There's some pronounced pluses, but a big minus for power users like me.
Plus #1 is that it's Universal. As someone who runs a…Read more MacBook pro, I found that to be a huge plus. The speed improvement is noticeable.
Plus #2 is the interface. It's REALLY smooth, intuitive, and well-done.
Plus #3 is PowerPoint. The makeover is just right.
The big minus is no VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). If you use VBA to automate processes in Office, it's gone from 2008. Not coming back.
But if you don't need VBA, and have never used it, it's well worth it.

Excel 2008 not for power users
Written by RJ from Sierra Madre

The elimination of VBA from Excel 2008 means that users who depend on features like Solver, histograms, extended statistical analy…Read moreses (such as ANOVA), and custom VBA enhancements are left out in the cold. We are left with two options: (1)stay with Excel 2004 or (2)buy the Windows version (Excel 2007). The first option penalizes Intel-based Mac users with reduced performance. I've reluctantly gone with the second option - which requires Vista or XP and Parallels (or similar program). The other problem with this approach is the new "Ribbon" interface to the Office products. Expect to lose a couple of weeks of productivity as your learn how to locate your favorite functions.
