A good hands-free option and Does work with 3GS

Contrary to the other posted review, the Belkin TuneBase Direct DOES work as a handsfree device for the iphone 3GS. I have been us…Read moreing for 2 weeks and it works just fine. Occasionally, you need to change the TuneBase frequency and the sound quality is no better than average (not as rich as an FM radio broadcast for example), but the fact that you can move from car-to-car and the build quality is excellent justifies the cost.

Works for me

I debated long over buying this product and used any and all reviews I could find. It is funny how you can read 10 good reviews b…Read moreut the 1 bad one sticks in your mind. I imagine the task of making a product that will work even adequately in a large number of different vehicles is difficult and compromising. For me the tunebase direct does a good job at all the things I wanted it for. It provides a mount/holder, although no matter where I move the arm it does hinder access to the climate controls, but not enough to worry about. It does play music/etc. through my aux connection, and although not up to audiophile addict standards it sounds pretty good to me. And it does allow me to have hands free calling, and this feature seemed to be the most suspect in most reviews, but after adjusting volume levels on the phone and on the stereo it seems to work just fine. The caller claimed to hear me clearly enough and I heard them very clearly. And of course it charges the phone. The one thing that I might complain about is having to plug in a 3.5mm to the headphone jack. I'm no engineer and maybe it is obvious to those who are why this has to be, but I can't see why they can't make it so it only needs to be connected to the bottom dock connection. Other than that I am very satisfied with this unit.

Audio Quality is Lacking

Other than that, it does everything else in an ok manner. But an audio product should not have audio issues.
Also, contacting Belkin's customer support was a miserable experience and I am still trying to get things worked out. I may just have to eat the cost and find something else.(3 of 9 people found this review useful)

nice design, not bad, not great

IPhone 3Gs
1. This is the most complicated packaging on earth, It took me 10 minutes and two cuts from a knife to get the produc…Read moret out.
2. The pieces appear to be well designed and the holder for the phone is discreet.
3. Install: Everything plugged in as advertised. My concerns before I bought were with the length of the arm holding the phone. This is a cantilever with a good amount of weight at the endpoint (the phone), so as suspected the phone moves when touched and has to be held to effectively push the home button without unintentionally repositioning. When the car was moving the movement wasn't too bad but it did move.
4. Music play: Here I use both my ITunes library and Pandora. Both sounded great and again worked as advertised.
5. Hands free: The unit came with a disclaimer about feedback. I feel this should be in the fine print before you buy. Hands free sounded great on my end, however the other end the feed back was really annoying. Because the mic is off to the side and at a similar level to the door speakers of the car there is a good amount of crossover in sound. You would have to turn the speakers down to an almost inaudible level to cancel the feedback. I have a Volvo Xc70 and this could be related to the location of my speakers, other cars may not have this problem.
6. Verdict: Buy this for the music function and holder first and Hands free second. I like Belkin and have many of their products. This is simply a case of physics, and location, there is no magic device that will do this well for Hands free unless you pay $$$ for a pro unit.

I looked for a device for the original iPhone since day one and now that I upgraded to the iPhone 3GS I am very happy this product arrived. It works very well. I like the capability of it charging too. (I did have the 3.5mm cable in backwards at first, my fault but when connected properly it starting the charging process). You have to adjust volume on phone and stero to get the right volume but once you do it works PERFECT! The gooseneck cable could have been just a bit longer but not really necessary for it to work great. I give this item a 5 STAR RATING.. I am so happy I purchased this today. Very easy installation. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!

Great dual-use product

I recently bought this because my old car adapter does not support my iPhone. So far this has done a great job of allowing me to …Read moreplay my music through the car stereo, and also has worked really well as a hands-free device -- just make sure you turn the volume up on your iphone otherwise you may not hear it through the car stereo. My only BIG complaint with this is the location of the aux output and USB ports on the adapter... they're located on the bottom of the piece that plugs into the cigarette lighter instead of on the side or top... this seems to be a big design flaw as most lighter plugs are located at the bottom of the dash of the car making those ports inaccessible. So I have to keep the unit rotated and bend the arm back up to plug in the aux line, and the arm isn't as strong as I thought it would be. But it still works well for both music and talking on the phone.
