    Works Wonderfully and Flawlessly

I read various product reviews for a backup drive and settled on the Time Capsule. I was a little apprehensive based on some of the negative reviews, but mine works wonderfully and flawlessly. I piggy backed the Time Capsule onto a Verizon Fiber Optic wireless router; it took a few minutes to set up but I was off and running and started my first backup. It took about seven hours to do the initial backup of 70 gb; I had no errors or restarts and it continues to do its backups regularly and flawlessly. I highly recommend this product.

    It Simply Works!

It's a "set-and-forget" device. Once you've SET IT CORRECTLY everything works flawlessly! It has a router capability to complement or replace your existing router (it's a far superior router than what you have right now- i bet), it has a usb port for your printer (so you can print wirelessly), the same usb port you could use to add an additional storage device, three gigabit LAN ports and a simultaneous dual band feature (sweet!). What's not to like? N O N E!

    Good, but not great

Out of the box this is a very good looking piece of networking kit, probably only trumped by the Linksys WRT610N.
Setup was a breeze "5/5" I just selected replace an existing network setup and within 5 minutes the whole thing was up and running without the need to reset any of my client machines (both Mac and PC).
Time Machine on the MBP worked great if a bit slowly for the first backup.
Big problem is range, it is far worse than the old Netgear router it replaces, by quite a margin, the wireless signal just wont reach my home office any more "1/5" as this is one of the primary reasons for upgrading.
I have just purchased an airport express to use as a range extender, so we will see if this improves anything!

I can only say good things

I was a bit skeptical about getting this at first because I didn't want to put up with any hassles that I would think came with this product, especially if I'm going to shell out $300. Turns out I wouldn't have it any other way. After you set up this bad boy and pair it with your mac (or PC for you mac haters out there), you never need to worry about it again. Setting up MIGHT be a little tricky for the uneducated, but it's nothing a call to applecare can't take care of. I connected this to my AT&T router and it dramatically sped up my internet and download speeds. I backs up automatically every hour, which is very nice. For me, it took about 2 whole days to fully back up everything for the first time because I went without backing anything up for two years. But if you have any doubts or concerns about, take it from my perspective. It's well worth the money.

    Modem Missing??

    Written by WS from Doha

    Apr 19, 2009

This device lacks a modem. I wanted it so hard that I only use one device for internet connection as well as an external hard drive for backing up my computers. But when I was about to buy it, I found out that it lacks a port for the DSL Line, which means i would need an additional router to get connected. This gets me back to the point where I would have 2 devices.

I chose to buy an external 4TB RAID Hard Drive of 2 2TB disks. and use my old wireless router. Too bad for apple to miss such a basic thing.

I understand why Apple would not include a modem into the time capsule. This could be because there are many types of connections around the world. But actually the time capsule is not a portable device which would normally be moved around, and it's beauty would not really get affected badly if its size increases an inch, and modem functionality is added. Apple can actually add support for the most dominant connections (DSL and T-1).

I bought this Time capsule so I could hook up my Blu-Ray player to the Internet and streamline Netflix. To set up this Time Capsule for Backup, and as a airport extreme wireless router and to Streamline the internet, it took about 10 minutes. I would recommend this to anyone wanting wireless. Spend the extra money and get nothing but Quality. It will be the easiest setup you have ever had.

    Stunning in its simplicity

Having just had a close shave and nearly loosing 6 months of photos and document I decided I'd invest in a backup system for my new macbook pro. Gigabit ethernet and Dual radio Wifi a/b/g + n it was a good deal. Received the box from apple the day after I ordered and was about the most simple device to setup as I've ever had. It even had a menu option (Replace existing wireless access point) which uses the connection information to configure the time capsule. Did a minor firmware upgrade before I started and started the backup. Job done.. total time from opening the box to starting the backup 5 min. An extremely simple and effective device. Highly recommended and at the time of writing time machine is the simplest and best backup software on the market.

    Backups are WAY too slow

    Written by TR from Anchorage

I used to use SuperDuper! to back up my computer and it worked great. I am not at all happy with Time Capsule. It takes much too long to back up a small number of files. And if your computer crashes between backups it literally takes HOURS for it to prepare the next backup. Furthermore, it has no power switch. So there's no safe way to power it down. In principle Time Capsule is a great idea, but in practice it is poorly executed. A real letdown from Apple. Go with another solution, or at least wait for the next version.

Great Product--Does EXACTLY what it says

It was a very easy set up, simply install the software then configure it with the airport utility. What I liked was the option to "replace an existing base station" in the set up and all my devices hooked right up without me having to do anything. Then it backs up automatically and you never have to think about it. All the bad reviewers I think are missing the point of this device and wanting more. If you want more options and freedom get a separate hard drive and do everything manually. If you want wireless automation and a great router, get this ASAP.
