Time Capsule - 500 GB
Disappointed
Written by HH from CALGARY

For starters, I have to say that I love all that is Apple. I own an iMac, Macbook, iphone, ipod etc.
I own the Time Capsule for over a year now and have had problems since. First the wireless would not work for the life of me (I'm quite knowledgable around computers) until I had to wire it to my iMac. Then it would refuse to backup for no reason whatsoever. I had it replaced.
Now the backup system does not work again. I've had to reset it to factory settings many times - probably around 6 or 7 since first purchased (which is extremely frustrating since I put some original files on it).
It's unlikely that I have a lemon, given that it was replaced. I think that the firmware can't handle a serious computer user (as opposed to someone who just checks e-mail and does wordprocessing).
I'm not trying to dissaude you from buying it. As all apple devices, it is beautiful. But while Apple products are reknown for beauty and function, this one lacks the function.

Time Capsule - 500 GB
Easy to use

This product is a great 2 in one product that is easy to set up and secure... unlike other networking devices I have used in the past. Trust me, spend the extra $ to get the back up drive... it's worth it... as opposed to purchasing separate. Air Port Extreme + a hard drive... easy decision... runs on its own in the background, you won't even notice it.

Apple does it again!

I love this thing! It was so easy to set up and the automatic backups work flawlessly. I don't even notice when it backs up. The dual-band WiFi signal is amazing, so now all the wireless devices in my house run at optimal speeds! Buy it! Trust me. You won't regret it!

Firstly can I saw well done Apple ! I ordered this product at 3pm 3rd March and got it the very next day ! This product is amazing , after returning my existing time capsule for this one I have been extremely pleased . The dual band gives you the most out of your wireless with our household connecting 2 MacBooks , iMac and Apple TV all on 5ghz then the windows laptop and the iPhone on the 2.4 ! Set up could not be easier , simply plug in and away you go . The guest network is also neat for people visiting . 5 stars

Make sure you know what you are going to use your TC for before purchasing
Written by MC from Portsmouth

When you read the sales pitch the TC is sold as a backup device for Time Machine and as file storage that can be accessed remotely via Mobile Me.
The issue is that its not clear in the marketing that using the TC in both roles is not possible.
You cannot limit the amount of space for a Time Machine backup, it will keep backing up until the disk is full and then it will delete older backups. This means that eventually there will be no space for file storage.
I was caught out but i still would recommend the product but make sure you know what you want it for:-
* File Storage
* File Backup

Time Capsule - 500 GB
Cool when it works

I've had a 500GB Time Capsule for a year now. Like most Apple products, the concept is excellent - backup, wireless router, network hub all in one. It was easy to configure and worked just as advertised - for a while.
Then one morning it was gone. I spent an hour trouble shooting, and finally had to do a full reset which resulted in a loss of all of my backup data - a bad day. A couple of months later it happened again. No warning, nothing. I had to reset it again. Goodbye backup data. It has happened again - twice. I've had it checked - no problems found.
My confidence in Time Capsule is gone. I plan on buying a third party external hard drive for backup.(114 of 135 people found this review useful)

Not Looking Back
Written by RL from Bakersfield

I must admit, I was a little hesitant about buying a Time Capsule for my IMac and MacBook. I had read other reviews about how difficult a time they had setting it up, poor wifi connection and flat out, "just not working". But I got it anyways. Let me tell you, I'm not looking back. I love it. Two-in-one, what a great concept. Previously, I had a Western Digital external hard drive and a Linksys router. As soon as I plugged it in, the Mac read the time capsule and it was as simple as point and click. I didn't even have to read the manual that came with it. It backed everything up without any problems. Better yet, I don't even have to tell it to back anything up. It backs up on its own. As far as my internet connection, it's surprisingly much quicker. For the longest time, I thought the lag was due to my internet provider. I love it and I can't believe it took me so long to finally get one. Definitely get one for yourself!

Time Capsule - 500 GB
Works Great
Written by DA from Middleton

I bought the 500GB dual-band Time Capsule about 10 days ago, notwithstanding a few worries about how well it would work and the ease of set-up, based on some of the reviews here (I'm more or less a novice). But I needed a way to back up my MacBook and didn't want to keep connecting and disconnecting an external hard drive, so I took the plunge.
I have been totally satisfied. The set up was straightforward. The initial backup (about 90 GB) was done overnight using an ethernet cable. Since then the wireless backups have happened seamlessly. What I didn't expect was how much this has speeded up my Internet connection -- particularly the MacBook which is 802.11n. I attribute this to the dual-band feature, since I think my old network operated at the slower speed dictated by my older iMac. The MacBook really flies now. And I have my printer plugged into the time capsule now so can print from either computer wirelessly. In short, exteremely satisfied with this product.(76 of 84 people found this review useful)

Time Capsule - 500 GB
Great Network Device, Poor Back-Up Device
Written by PL from CLEMSON

In a nutshell, I think one is better off buying an Airport Extreme and a typical desktop hard drive with a Firewire for back-up. Here's why.
This is a great wireless router. The dual band has optimized my household's two laptops, one with g and one with n. It even seems to have improved the wireless performance on my old PowerBook G4, which never had great wireless power.
As for the Time Capsule back-up part of this device, it is not good. It takes literally days to back-up the first time, and if you have an interruption in the process, you are really in trouble. (After this Time Machine will cause the computer to crash, and the only hope seems to be to erase the back-up file on the Time Capsule and to start over.) Three (or four?) days after setting up the Time Capsule i am still trying to get an initial back-up. It has literally been running for these three to four days, almost non-stop. I tried wireless and with direct connection. Now its running wireless again, and after about 14 hours it has backed up 19 of 45 GB.
There is a reason that back-up drives come with Firewire. Apple has already made a big contribution with the Time Machine software in making desktop back-up drives much more user-friendly. In this case their software for this purpose has greatly out-performed their hardware.(87 of 106 people found this review useful)

Very Disappointed!!!

I am on my third Time Capsule within one year because the first two have crashed for no apparent reason. I have had to purchase a separate external hard drive just to back up all of my data. I have always enjoyed Apple products, but this one is the worst by far.
