Comming from PC to iMac
Written by KC from Glumsø

What an experience to just buy a computer (20" iMac) to a fair price and find that it has what it takes to do what we want for private use right out of the box.
The pro-applications I use for work on a PC mostly run on the Mac as well so I haven't looked at problems this far.(2 of 2 people found this review useful)

SOOOO much improvement in Imovie
Written by VD from Port Washington

I HATED iMovie 08, it was so confusing and we couldnt do anything creative with it or anything, but now with iLife 09, I can edit movies with style again like I did with iMovie 06 and below. I only gave it 4 stars because I never use iPhoto or iDVD or iWeb all that much, so I can't speak for those applications.

iLife/iWorks

After using PC and the years of trouble with PPt and word, it is a super pleasure to use all of Mac's products. I use both iWorks and ilife with pleasure.
Design is easy no matter which one I use and I have used it plenty for the past 3 years.
Thanks to the staff at Apple and I hope to see more.

I work in the back sound room of a church twice a week and it get's pretty hectic back there! iLife '09 is the perfect tool for this job! I've been doing it for a few years now and the church recently switched from Windows to Mac (and iLife). It surely made all the difference! It's fun, easy, and extremely convenient! Try it!

iLife 09 is fine for this home consumer
Written by HM from Eugene

I gave a negative review to iLife 08, as I really disliked iMovie 08. This new version of iMovie has made me quite happy and was a great deal (Mac Box Set). It is easy to use a flash-based camcorder, import, and make a quick movie to post on the web. That is all I want, and the final result is fine, including picture in picture and greenscreen. Yes, it was easy to adjust audio in iMovie 06, but I find I never use it having bought iMovie 09. Now if there were a button to click to bring down a timeline option for more involved work...heaven.
When you add in the two websites I built in iWeb, and the photo slideshows I quickly made in iPhoto...well, I am fine with the new version. I invested $200 in Final Cut Express but found it difficult without real training, even after buying a training DVD. I do wish iPhoto had a way to turn off faces and places, and there were a few more themes in iMovie.(28 of 35 people found this review useful)

New Garageband not what it seemed
Written by BH from Scottsdale

DISCLAIMER: ONLY REVIEWING GARAGEBAND '09
I like to think of myself as a savvy guy when it comes to software, but I really misjudged Garageband '09. I guess I just wasn't reading close enough, but it really looked to me that it was gonna have a lot of new guitar SOFTWARE instruments and settings. My only real problems with GB thus far has been that the guitars and string instruments just don't quite sound real, at least not on the level of the other software instruments. So when I saw this, or thought I saw it - I was over the moon. Finally I could make the kind of music I wanted. BUT - it turns out all these great new instruments and settings ARE FOR REAL INSTRUMENTS ONLY - IE when you plug in a real guitar. Seeing as I don't play guitar - just keyboard, it was a MAJOR letdown.(40 of 61 people found this review useful)

iLife '09 is Amazing!!!
Written by BT from camp hill

First off, the interface in iMove is amazing. I used iMovie '06 and this is 100 times better than that. I love the work flow. Going from '06 to '09 was like going from a Pinto to a Ferrari. I love it!! I was able to make a stunning video in no time. I bought this iLife upgrade just for one project. It was well worth the cost. Between using the new themes for slide shows in iPhoto and combining the new power of iMove, the possibilities are endless. Ya, sure, you can get a full movie editing package, but what you get for $80 is well worth it. If you can't make something nice with this suite, you just aren't being creative enough. I did run into situations were I was limited, but that just made me think about how to do it another way. In the end I was able to get exactly what I wanted with very little hassle. I work with different kinds of programs all day long. This new interface was very refreshing to use. Thank you.
I ran this suite on a Mac mini 1.83 Core 2 Duo with 1gig of ram with OS X 10.5.6. As long as I kept most other program closed I was hassle free. If I had Firefox, iTunes, Quicktime and everything else under the sun open, I could make the machine hang. When just using iPhoto and iMove by itself, I was problem free.
Don't hesitate to buy this upgrade, it's worth it.(28 of 35 people found this review useful)

Don't buy it for iMovie if you loved iMovie 06
Written by CD from Salt Lake City

If you need low-cost digital linear editing, buy Final Cut Express... I guess.
I suppose I'm one of those naive Apple fans who just doesn't think "buyer beware" when it comes to Apple products. I have loved the company for 20 years. But somehow I missed any hype about the dumbing down of iMovie 06 (yep, I've been in a hole for 3 years) and just trustingly "upgraded" to iMovie 09.
I get it, okay? Apple decided to make iMovie just for true, true beginners who want to upload a bit of junior's baseball game, dump in a soundtrack of "Take me out to the ball game" and call it good. Its sort of like PowerPoint or Word in that it gives people who want everything done for them, a limited product that does just that.
You see, my son and I made 20 some-odd cool movies in iMovie 06 (one was an 11-minute Trojan war with Playmobile guys)--praising Apple every minute for making such a professional tool free with our iMac. Naturally, we got used to making our music edits with perfect exactness, playing with precise time codes, seeing everything on a timeline, and other stuff iMovie can no longer do. Bummer. I found the new "precision editor" function anything but precise.
I'm just not used to this software-going-backwards thing. Not from Apple anyway.
Net takeaway is; I'm happy to spring for Final Cut Express. I even like some of the other stuff I got in iLife 09. I just wish I hadn't wasted 14 hours today certain I just had to "learn" the new iMovie, only to find out the stuff I wanted it to do was no longer there. It was like opening up an iPhone and finding a Blackberry inside.
Buyer beware.
