For the money this a great system. I don't like the adapters that come with it, but the iPhone 3g works fine without one. Love the…Read more fact that it charges the phone and iPod touch while playing them. Also works while listening to Internet radio. 4.5 stars

Altec Lansing inMotion MAX
best ipod speaker

Ive had the inMotion MAX for a few months now and I didnt open it because I was worried it would be just another iPod dock. I wa…Read mores wrong. The Altec Lansing inMotion MAX is more feature rich, offers comparable if not better sound, and is more compact than other docks Ive used in the past few years, including my Bose SoundDock Portable.
The inMotion is a completely portable iPod dock with built-in battery and a collapsable front tray and rear foot. It works with
almost every iPod including the iPhone. It supports aux-in devices via a mini-jack and also includes an FM tuner.
Before you attack my earlier comparison, Im coming at this in the same way the average consumer would with the understanding that there are great iPod docks (like the Tannoy), good ones (like these and the Bose), and bad ones. These are in the mid-range and thats fine for most folks.

Almost

I am generally pleased with this product but given the price I was hoping for better sound quality, especially in the base. I use …Read morethis next to the bed for music at night and in the morning so ultimate sound isn't critical but nice to have. The BEST feature is the shielding that prevents that annoying cell phone chirping. My previous clock/radio drove me nuts anytime I had my iPhone within three feet. The shielding worksand it's probably the chief reason I didn't go for the Bose model. I've listened to the Bose listed for around $300 and the base response seemed much better. But $200 was my limit to spend on a night stand speakerif I want more sound I turn on home hi-fi system. This Altec Lansing doesn't have a clock built in, so you have to use the clock/alarm features on your iPhone or iPod. The built-in radio is a nice complimentary function but, without a clock/alarm in the unit, you can't wake up to the radio.

Functional elegance

This speaker looks fantastic on the corner shelf in our living room. We just bought our first home, so were pretty picky about th…Read moree decor; it fits nicely. I use this speaker with my first-generation iPhone which no longer has cell phone service since we upgraded to 3G phones. Its small size packs a big sound and we still have access to FM radio stations. I felt nervous about spending $300 on the Bose system, so I dont have a comparison of the two. I chose this Altec system over the other one because it's their newer model, according to the company's Web site. One unexpected perk: the top of the speaker has touch sensitive controls, instead of traditional buttons; pretty snazzy.

Also, if I have a call come in through my iPhone, the music cuts out so that I am aware of the call. Pretty clever. Overall, superior sound from a portable system with some great extras.
