Product needs work... but has lovely packaging

    Dear Apple,

I am a loyal Mac user and a big fan of Final Cut. I've used it since version 1.5 and you would have to foul it up egregiously for me to switch editing applications.

In the future, however, perhaps it would be more prudent to spend less time and money preparing a box and manuals that make me feel like I'm buying a diamond necklace, and more time making sure that Motion doesn't crash my (very new/fast/RAM loaded) laptop every hour. If time allows after that, please fix the horrific experience that is the Compressor interface.

Be well. Looking forward to the holiday fruit cake, as always.

    Hugs and Kisses,

    D.

    Gets better and better

    Written by AD from Ocoee

I started using FCP when it first came out, FCP 1.0 on a G3 that had 6 GB of storage - I've upgraded along the way - all the way to the latest and greatest. I've never edited on an AVID and the only reason they're still around is because of how much they cost, so users don't want to just trash them...anyhow they'll be all gone in the next few years

The only criticism I have for FCP 6 is there just isn't enough new and innovative stuff to upgrade from FCP 5.1.

It's nice to have some of the upgrades that came with it but for all in all it's not a major change from the latest version. Still HD, still Dolby compatible, still all good stuff in the box

One thing apple finally seemed to get right are the dropped frames during playback and timecode break search while capturing; and integrating with compressor got faster and seamless, Even authoring DVD's is simpler - if you have enough storage internal or external, you can edit and finish a feature film from your home and in true uncompressed HD, that's amazing.

Still, for ease, cost, which provide amazing results - this is THE editing system.

That's why most major Hollywood feature films cut on FCP, and all HD TV

    I'm a Newbie to editing

    Written by JS from Maplewood

This is my first jump into video editing and I swear that up until 4 days ago I have never even looked at video editing. I have always wanted to do it, just never had the chance. So I made the leap and purchased a 24" 2.8 iMac and Final Cut Studio 2 along with 1 year of one on one. So I loaded everything in, then waited for my first one on one to ask "how do I get started?" and believe it or not, I can already log, edit, add effects, and use live type. Not even a week in and I'm editing with a huge smile on my face. Once you grasp the way Final Cut Pro works, it's almost too easy. I would have to say that if you are thinking about getting this but are a little sceptical (as was I), do it. You will be very happy with your choice.

    Dynamic Video Tool

Written by LS from Norrth Canton

SInce I started using Final Cut Pro in 2004, my company has has garnered 13 video awards. With Final Cut Studio 1 and now 2, videos taken at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival are playing in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and DVDs created with DVDSP 4 have been sent to every Hall of Famer. Additonally two area bands had award winning videos created with FCS1 or 2. My MACs beat my PCs hands down in rendering time, and I can deliever better and faster results on my MAC then I ever could using AVID on a PC. As for LiveType, Motion, and Compressor, show me any other program{s} that can give such dynamic affordable results.
However, I do miss my AMIGA, but that was last century; MAC is now

THE DO IT ALL OOUT THE BOX SUITE

I think final cut pro is simply the best editing suit out there for small to medium productions. Why, because it does everything you need it to and the simplicity of having a fully integrated suit saves so much time, this is well worth the money, (even if i do have to pay $400 more cos i live in England). Final cut as well is far better then avid it looks and handles better, and is a lot more stable. i have used final cut for documentaries and feature length films and it has been a dream to work with.

TOO MUCH MONEY FOR WASTING TOO MUCH TIME

    Written by BK from Sacramento

I thought that FCPS2 would do away with the "render before you use it" deal that plagued the previous versions when importing titles created in LiveType. Apparently I was wrong - it only does CERTAIN types of LiveType files in realtime. And if I render the file, find I made an error and have to correct it, I have to render it all over. This is cumbersome when it comes to big files created in LiveType imported into FCPS2...if I need it I find that I am waiting and wasting time. Why are these guys so far behind the ball when it comes to realtime? I'd give negative stars, but these guys won't let me do it.

    Best ever

The fact that all programs in the package are able to work together perfectly, the interface is easy to use, each program is very powerful, and that you can make a professional movie easily with only a few other programs not included in this package (or nothing extra) are the things that make this a 5 star program package. It's worth every penny.

Just don't buy this if you're new to film-making or if film is just a small hobby. Final Cut Express is for you.

And you might need a pretty good Mac Pro to run some of these programs with a lot of HD footage open at once. Maybe a new iMac with 2.8 ghz and 4gb of RAM could do it...

well, if you're really interested in film making... buy this. Best I've ever tried. Better than Adobe Premeire CS3

A movie studio in a box!

    Written by AO from Crofton

Final Cut Studio 2 is a well done sequel to the original. With its ability to integrate from application to application, it makes doing your work really easier. Also with the number of options and configurations it has, it can cover almost anything. The only thing is the lack of next generation optical disc suport in DVD Studio Pro. With HD-DVD and Blu-Ray on the scene, ability to create movies on those formats needs to surface!

    Moving into the future

    Written by JB from BAYONNE

It was just over 5 years ago I made the transition from the PC platform to MAC for editing. I had grown fond of AVID and several other PC based editing programs. I had not considered a MAC or Final Cut at all. Then, hired to teach at a school where video was edited with MAC computers and the Final Cut Pro editing software, I found a new love for editing thanks to Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Studio is a great product for the professional, the teacher and the student. It encompasses all the great features I discovered most helpful in other Final Cut programs yet delivers a new degree of power to the editing process. If you simply take the time to understand how this newest version of Final Cut revolutionizes the editing process, I am sure you will agree, this is not only a great program; but a great value for the dollar as well!

Haven't made the switch yet, but I'm close

I've been editing since 1987, starting on a Sony, then Paltex, then CMX, then Axial, then Avid (Media Composer, Symphony, Adrenaline), and 4 years ago got up to speed on Avid DS Nitris and have been very happy with DS. Recently, however, Avid has been dropping the ball when it comes to necessary upgrades for DS and for Adrenaline, and our post house (34 Adrenalines, 3 DS's, 2 smokes, and now 6 full blown Final Cut suites) has been ripping out Avids and replacing them with Final Cut. I understand the transition from DS to Final Cut will be fairly easy (come on, if you can learn DS you can edit on ANYTHING!)and you cant beat the cost of a full blown Final Cut room ($20 - $25k)compared with a DS (about $180k). So I understand I'll have to deal with Final Cut being alot slower than DS, but I guess I can handle that, because we'll be charging less for FC. Any DS editors out there that have made the switch to Final cut? Help me out here.
