Disappointed
Written by JS from searcy

This was my first printer. I was initially happy with it. Then I started having trouble with the feeder mechanism. I kept getting the message that there was a paper jam even without any paper in the printer. I can't use it right now because it will not accept paper.

Pixma 480

This is the second, and last PIXMA i will buy. It was great at the beginning, but after less than a year it kept jamming. "Paper Jam" warnings over and over again...
The scanner is good, but the printer, not so much.(7 of 7 people found this review useful)

Be very careful with this one
Written by VP

My experience of the PIXMA is 100% negative. I've had two different PIXMA printers become useless in as little as three years. That's a terrible environmental record.
The ink is expensive for small cartridges, and my version needs both tanks (B/W and color) to print at all. The machine is rather cheap, but the ink costs a small fortune.
Even more dishonestly, the PIXMA mixes color ink with black so that it runs down the color cartridge even if you don't print in color at all. When this happens you WON'T be able to print without buying an over $30 cartridge (that on top of the $20 black ink). This caught me out twice in really important parts of the school year.
The PIXMA has no draft quality options, etc to save ink--another environmental gouge.
In short, this is not a good investment unless you print very, very little--really only a few pages a month. I don't think it's a particularly good choice for a student AT ALL. Certainly not one who is advanced in their studies. And it will need replacing in too little time.
I just switched away from the brand in sheer FRUSTRATION because it was a disaster. After 16 months or so (running on a fairly new MacBook) I had to plug and unplug the printer every few pages to get it to work.
Canon is also pulling the rising-price scam on its ink cartridges. They'll go up as much as 20% in the months after you buy this priner. Perhaps more.
SO STAY AWAY! Or get guarantees that Canon no longer pulls the color + b/w ink tank scam. I doubt they've changed it, but ask.(38 of 41 people found this review useful)

Terrible Purchase
Written by JJ

This printer is terrible. It does only last about a month and then it jams, it runs out of cartridge ink and it is expensive to buy. It is worth the money to get a new printer than to waste any more time on trying to get this printer to work. It is huge, bulky, and noisy. It processes more than it actually works.

Bummer
Written by CM from Tempe

I am a really broke college student who got this for free as well, I loved it at first it was amazing and so handy through USB, however after a few months it started eating/jamming only on the left side. Now after reading these reviews I know getting another is useless =/. If you have the money I wouldn't waste the time, if it's free you'll have a nice printer for a month at least . . .

Paper jam issues are real...
Written by JV from CHICAGO

I am not someone who has a lot of problems with hardware. However, I used my rebate to get this printer, and got one at work as well (MP530). Both are under 1 year old. I now have paper loading or jamming problems. The 530 can no longer load paper from the slider tray. This one jammed frequently, and now there is currently no paper jammed but it keeps telling me there is a jam and won't print (I'm not the only one who this has happened to). On top of all that, cartridges are expensive. I'm now looking for a non-Canon printer

Great Printer: the pros and cons
Written by TH from Marlborough
May 10, 2009
I bought this printer with my laptop and it is overall very nice. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros: Fast printing speed, beautiful design, vivid colors, easy to use, memory card support is really fast an easy
Cons: Slow processing speed, need to refill often, a little hard to setup on my laptop
Overall, I would suggest this printer to anybody who wants to print all around papers or things that do not require amazing color and quality.(18 of 20 people found this review useful)

PROBLEMS included
Written by CD from Boxborough

I bought this printer and after 2 months the paper started to jam. I called to complain and I was sent a new MP 480. It's been 2 months and the paper has started to jam again.
DON'T get this printer!
I looked at other reviews and many people have experienced similar problems.

Get it with the rebate
Written by RE from Allentown

I got the MP480 with the rebate when buying a new Mac, and given that situation, you would be crazy not to get it unless you needed another printer and were using the rebate toward it. We had an old scanner and the resolution and usability of this new Canon just trounces the old one (which was a Canon as well). It does an okay job as a general inkjet printer, but that is not what I will use it for, however. I have a low cost B&W laser printer for basic document printing as well as a pigment-ink photo printer. I also have another printer that does copying and faxing, but with the rebate, the scan and copy functions alone make it worth adding this onto your order if you are purchasing a desktop or laptop Mac.
