Diagram of the back of Time Capsule
  1. (1) Wireless Internet access requires a wireless-enabled computer, a base station or other access point, and Internet access; fees may apply. Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort Extreme.
  2. (2) Time Capsule is based on an IEEE 802.11n draft specification and is compatible with IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g. Performance is based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes Time Capsule-based network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort or AirPort Extreme enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions.

    Timecapsule a great deal overall.

This unit is simple, works well, and provides a number of technologies built into one. It is a great little value with a simple iRead morenterface.

Let's examine what you get in the package: Wireless Radio, Gigabit Ethernet Switch, Network Attached Storage(You can also use it as a Firewall). The 802.11n wireless radio can be used as an access point or a bridge(which is cool and not a normal feature on most access points). This means that you can extend your IP addresses already on your LAN instead of having to set up a new range, etc. This comes in handy. I do not recommend wireless mode for backup, unless necessary. It is fast, but wired is much faster and will not cause your system as much lag while it is running. I have a couple of iMAC units in the office and I connect them directly to the unit using copper cabling(make sure you use good cables CAT5e or better). The wired connections are very fast and backups happen in the background all the time so you dont have to worry about it. The Gig switch has 4 ports on it. The Network Attached storage is 1TB. This can store more data than you think since incrementals only store the changes and are normally very small. All in all, a great little value for the price. I wish there was a way to stack them and virtualize the drives across multiple units. I wish you could have them available for a virtual RAID using the ethernet cables. Who knows... COOL Product.

    Useless

The only reliable backups are the ones when the computer is connected with an Ethernet cable for 10 hours.

Otherwise, the backuRead moreps just fails. The wireless network is slowed down when the Time Machine "is preparing" to back up, although no backup actually takes place. It also takes minutes to shut down the computer when Time Machine "is preparing".

Super annoying. A lot less hassle to get the old portable harddrive out and connect with Firewire and do manual backup. At least you have a backup!

Good idea in theory (and it looks very slick), but useless in practice.

A Complete Safe Backup Soultion To A Home Network!!!

I was skeptical at first before my purchase. But I needed something that I could backup 3 of my computers wirelessly while using Read morea windows pc as well. The system is great. I was previously using a linksys wireless n router, after hooking the time capsule up I seemed to have a little increase in speed.

Also I like how time machine works when ever you want it to or automatically. So far under the auto settings it seems to run very well. Im quite the multi-tasker so I was afraid that while, downloading, uploading, burning dvds, working with VMware fusion windows xp, and editing in photoshop that I would have some serious slow downs, but none to speak of!!! Im quite impressed!! I also hooked up a 32gb thumb drive and it works like a charm! Good Job Apple!!!

    Shaky First Impression

Written by DL from Santa Monica

Setup of the Airport section was easy. It's an Airport Extreme with a 1 TB hard drive, and Airport works just great. However, the Read morehard drive when updated by wireless is DOG SLOW and hourly Time Machine updates are slowing down my wireless network. Which is a big problem.

Initial backup of 100 GB of data on my MacBook Pro took approximately 30 hours by wireless. Brutal. Initial backup of 400 GB of music and data on my iMac was going on 20 hours when it was inadvertently interrupted. Something Apple advises against. When I resumed, I tried doing so via USB for a better download time. Another 30 hours later, it became clear this process would not complete.

Apple Support suggested starting over with a direct Ethernet connection. This took around 20 hours to complete. Better than anything else I'd tried, but extremely slow for a hard drive in 2008. Something Apple's tech support pages don't tell you -- if the initial backup is interrupted, don't continue. Trash the incomplete backup and start over.

Now that everything is set up, the lack of configurability in Time Machine means that every hour an automatic backup takes place lasting 5-10 minutes. When this is happening, my Airport network slows to a crawl. Sometimes pages won't load at all. This is a serious bug. I would like to see Apple allow more configuration options in Time Machine, and come up with a software/firmware update to fix the speed issue, at least so that web pages take precedence over Time Machine backups and I don't lose Internet speed for a fraction of every hour as a penalty for using Time Machine.

I am considering disabling Time Machine when doing heavy web-surfing -- not optimal for a disaster-prevention program -- or even exchanging Time Capsule for an Airport Extreme, a new Airport Express and $200 cash. As a Mac faithful and AAPL shareholder, it pains me to say this, but this has been my experience.

If you don't have a ton of data, and aren't concerned about the speed issues, the feature set is certainly worth the premium price. However, if any of the above could be an issue for you, I'd do some more research and ask Apple if they intend to fix any of the above problems. Lots of luck!

I am an avid mac user and lover. I am writing on my eighth and mac in row that I have owned and loved. I bought this product expecRead moreting the same performance that I have come to know and love from the apple brand.

This product took 4 days to simply do the initial back up of 85 gb. I have a standard hard drive that could of done it in about 3 hours or less. I think it's a great concept but horrible payoff. I highly recommend you pass on this product and wait for the next better version.

Getting it running was very simple. I have a printer and two hard drives attached. I have edited Final Cut Pro projects wirelesslyRead more, and watched eyeTV recorded shows wirelessly.

The other day, I went to the mall and logged on to my Time Capsule server using the Apple Store's wireless network. I copied a file from my MacBook Pro back to one of the drives attached to the Time Capsule. Cool.

It is probably possible to do the things Time Capsule does for less money, but who cares? This device simply works.

It would be nice to have a disk utility to check the health of the drive.
