    Why is this still here?

The camera is great. I bought one in 2005, and I still use it. But Canon has moved on, with the XTi, XS, XSi etc etc.
If you can Read moreeven find one of these new, it should be about $400.

i work for a stock photography agency and this is what i use most of the time, great inexpensive camera that you can take anywhereRead more with out worrying about damaging your more expensive body. throw a good lens on this camera and you will barely be able to tell the difference compared to more expensive bodies (in normal lighting conditions). bottom line is you get what you pay for, and for this price you get pretty much

I have been using this camera for almost a year now and I have been nothing by pleased by the results. I am looking into getting aRead more higher megapixel camera one of these days, but when I do...you better believe it will be a Canon. lus, I think it was genius that they made it so you could use your lenses from older film SLRs.

Great for its time, great forever

Note: if you're in the market right now, do not buy this camera yet. Hold out for the release of the XTi, the 10 MP upgrade whichRead more is getting strong reviews from notable photographers. At the very least the price will drop $100 within the next 30 days.

However, do buy this camera if you're looking for the best picture in indoor and available light shots for an affordable price. There is no better sensor on the market in dim lighting than the Canon CMOS (to the guy who claimed noisy 200 ISO, you got a bad camera, mate, that's the only explanation...get it fixed! Or maybe you were using Aperture 1.0 with its buggy low light processing?) and no better image processor that Digic II. Yeah, the 20 and 30d cameras have two dials, different metering modes, blah blah...this camera takes a shot that's on par for $400 off, which is money you can sink into a good lens.

Nikon's cameras are instant-access and do beat this camera slightly in dynamic range and bright outdoor photography (they have a 50 ISO setting, after all). And Olympus' cameras have superior dust protection (also fixed in the XTi model). But none can compare to the Rebel for versatility and quality for the price in all light levels.

Noise and other things as compared to the D50

Written by MM from Del Mar

This is a great camera. Heres a comparisson with the D50 (I have used both, and the D50 semi-professionaly)

    First, the bad:
The noise, even at ISO 200 is terrible. (The Nikon D50 has less noise at ISO 1600 than the Rebel at ISO 200)

Slow Flash Sync. (Nikon D50 is at 1/500, Rebel is 1/250)

Way to light (Not a problem if you treat it well, but for sports photography and photojournalism you are going to want a stronger camera)

Small LCD Screen, 1.8" (D50 has a 2" and you really see the difference)
    And the good:

Very easy to learn, simple menus (Nikon menus have always been complicated)

Depth of Field Preview (Absent on the D50)

Uses Compact Flash Card (If you ever upgrade you can use the same card)

Tons of lenses available (Equal to Nikon's selection, Canon has more telephoto lenses, but some Nikon glass has achieved legendary status)

    Fits nice in your hand

Lots of custom options (It is a DSLR, I wouldn't expect anything less)

Can shoot black and white (Not available on D50)

In terms of image quallity, you really can't see any difference between the Rebel and D50. Overall this is a great camera. A perfect choice for a first DSLR.

    Dropped it more then once

I have had this camera for well over a year, it is one great DSLR. I work as a ships inspector for purchase and sales of Very largRead moree ships. I have been in mud, rain and salt with this camera, it has traveled around the world and it is still the best camera I have ever had. The lens that comes with it is not great, invest in lenses. It makes all the difference. Best of luck.
